3 tips for when the kids come over for summer visitation

One major post-divorce consideration is summer visitation. If you get the kids for an extended summer visit, you are likely looking forward to it. While your children are probably excited to spend more time with you too, it can also be complex and stressful for them.

If you have teens or tweens, the situation may be even rougher to figure out. Plus, it can come with some strain for you and the other parent. Here are some summer visitation pointers to make the process easier on everyone.

1. Communicate (and encourage communication) with your ex

Stay in consistent contact with your former spouse to relay important details. Keeping your ex in the loop eases tensions. That said, you also need to be realistic about how your kids want to talk to their other parent. You should not assume your kids will check out completely. Instead, let your kids know you are totally fine with them staying in touch via texts, phone calls and video chats. This can help prevent your children from harboring any sort of resentment about the visit.

2. Plan fun activities

Tweens and teens may love to stay inside and play video games all day or stare at their phones. While you should allow them to have this type of leisure time, take advantage of the long schedule you have. Plan to take them out on fun outings throughout the visit. Going to a theme park or taking them for a hike can create unforgettable memories everyone is sure to cherish.

3. Take your kids to see extended family members

A big chunk of summer visitation is the perfect opportunity to let your kids reconnect with other family members. This is something you may know makes sense, but can get lost in the fray if you do not plan for it. Make specific preparations on your schedule so your kids do not miss out on seeing their cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents.
