4 reasons why second marriages are more likely to fail

Entering a second marriage may mean preparing yourself for a second divorce. While subsequent relationships can certainly work out, statistics show they tend to fail. 60 percent of second marriages and 65 percent of third marriages end in divorce, in comparison to roughly 50 percent of first marriages.

Even if you have the best intentions, your second marital union may fall apart. Why does this happen? Here are a few core reasons why more marriages often result in more trouble.

1. Rushing and rebounding

Many couples enter into relationships while in the process of divorcing their first spouse or shortly thereafter. If you rebound into a new marriage, you may not fully consider the compatibility between the two of you. Additionally, it can create trust problems.

2. Financial stress

When you get married for the first time, you expect to divide finances, share responsibilities and pursue goals together. If you enter another marriage later in your life, chances are you have more assets and independent financial goals. It is difficult for newly-wedded older couples to see eye-to-eye on financial issues. You may have a hard time dividing assets and splitting household finances.

3. Easier to end

Divorcing is hard work. If you already have been through one, it may not seem as difficult. Plus, you may not share significant assets or child custody in a second marriage, so you have fewer incentives to resolve marital problems. A second divorce is not nearly as scary as the first.

4. Difficulty blending families

If children are part of the picture, your vision of sharing a romantic union with your new partner may not be as pleasant as you imagine. Not only can kids become jealous or hurt because of second marriages, but you may need to manage two families. This can put an enormous amount of stress on your relationship.
