3 mistakes not to make when fighting for custody

In a child custody case, the most important thing is that your child is receiving care and support. If you and your spouse cannot agree on a parenting plan, then the court will do so for you. The judge will create a plan that appears to be in your child's best interests.

As a newly single parent, you may make mistakes when you enter court. It is your attorney's job to help you avoid these mistakes. Here are three that you should know about before you go to court.

1. Talking about your relationship instead of your child

The judge wants to know what you are going to do for your child, and they are less likely to care about the relationship you have with the other parent. This is not the time to describe every way that your ex-partner has wronged you. Show that you are willing to collaborate with your ex instead of making a scene out of your divorce.

2. Being too emotional in court

Screaming, fighting and acting out only make you look like a negative influence on your child. Stay calm and be professional in court.

3. Being too passive

Of course, being too passive is just as bad as other mistakes. You want to show that you want custody, show up on time and be ready with the correct paperwork turned in.

These are just three of many tips you should remember when you're going to court for child custody. The right approach makes all the difference when you're in front of a judge.
